Management & Responsibility

The Limits of Calculation

For 300 years we have thought in economic terms; for 100 years we have organized companies and society through management. This has made humanity healthier and more prosperous.

But responsibility cannot be managed. It is not part of a universally valid system of metrics — it needs, and defines, the individual human being.

Human & Machine

What the Algorithm Cannot Replace

Philosophers have defined the human being as a »being with language« or as a »rational animal«. Now that the machine, too, can speak and argue, the human being seems to be becoming superfluous. Techno-philosophers are already speculating about its replacement.

But being human is not exhausted by eloquent intelligence. It shows itself in standing up for the other, in the decision that shapes the uniqueness of one’s own existence. Of this, the machine understands nothing. It can be copied.

Democracy & Economy

What the Market Cannot Reconcile

For a long time, economists and entrepreneurs viewed democracy with skepticism. For economics follows a different logic than democracy. It was only around fifty years ago that the conviction prevailed that democratic forms of government need not harm capitalism.

But anyone who now relies on »the economy« coming to democracy’s aid underestimates its own logic and ideological flexibility. It will come down to each individual — if necessary, against their own economic interests.
